INDUCT LINK WRAY INTO THE ROCK & ROLL HALL OF FAME

To the members of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame:

We respectfully encourage the Nominating Committee and voting members of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame to induct Link Wray into the Hall of Fame.

Link Wray is a founding father of rock and roll.  Link Wray is recognized throughout the entire world as “The Father of the Power Chord”.  His 1958 song “Rumble” was the first to use fuzztone and distortion – creating the foundation of rock and roll guitar.

Unfortunately, Link Wray passed away on November 5, 2005.  To pay tribute to this guitar master, Bob Dylan and Bruce Springsteen played Link’s “Rumble” in concert.  News media all over the world reported on the passing of this rock legend.

During his half century career, Link met or played with everyone from Patsy Cline to Bruce Springsteen.  Unlike many of his contemporaries from the 1950’s, Link never settled for playing the oldies circuit.  He continued to stretch the bounds of rock and roll, releasing new music throughout his career.

As an example of Link’s longevity playing rock and roll, in 1958 you could buy “Rumble” on a 78.  In 2006 you can purchase his video “The Rumble Man” on DVD.  He continued to rock throughout his life, playing a 40 date tour in the US just four months before his passing.

Heavy metal, punk rock, grunge, intstrumental, surf and more can all trace their roots to Link Wray.  Without the power chord, these genres of rock and roll would not have existed.  Bob Dylan, Neil Young and Pete Townshend cite Link Wray as a critical influence on their respective careers.

Link’s song “Rumble” was banned in several markets due to the fear that it would incite teenagers to riot.  All the more remarkable is that “Rumble” is an instrumentalHow much more “rock and roll” can you get than that?

We've tried to get the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Nominating Committee to see the light and finally induct Link.  Two petitions with close to a thousand names and no luck.  But we ain't givin' up!
